About Us
The Community Justice Center foresees its role as a legal hub for some of Central New Jersey’s progressive movers and shakers. By employing an interdisciplinary approach to social justice, the CJC will provide the necessary ingredient to effective community empowerment and issue-driven campaigns, as it will function as the legal arm. In the long term, the CJC intends to focus on four areas, all of which are underserved in the legal community. Initially, the latter two will be the focus:
- Civil Rights;
- Environmental Justice;
- Public Benefits; and
- Returning Veterans’ Rights.
The CJC recognizes that, as the legal arm, it is just one piece to the puzzle. Through collaboration with civil rights activists, environmentalists, musicians, psychologists, veterans, and other experts, the CJC will be the only organization of its kind in Central New Jersey to bring together diverse disciplines and unite them in their quests to address systemic inequality and inequity.
The underlying principle that forms the foundation of our work is the belief that the free flow of information between citizens and those in positions of power can help bridge the gap between them. Toward this end, the CJC will be a “conduit”, as its in-house interdisciplinary composition makes it uniquely poised to take the pulse of Trenton and its environs to inform the Legislature and public about issues and, conversely, to educate the community about bills that might impact it. When the CJC identifies a need for legal intervention, it will provide direct services to individuals and/or classes of individuals.
